Studio Rhythmics presents The Loop at Art House – United Cowboys, Dutch Design Week. A circular light orbit mimicking the sun’s path, marking time through movement. Designed to soften rigid clock-time, it creates a meditative space where visitors reflect on time, space, and self.
Reimagining Time Through Light and Motion
The Loop is a circular time-telling light fixture orbiting within an inhabited space. Its function resembles much of sun paths and its shadow transitions indicating time; for the Loop, the position on the orbit emulates it, with a full orbital rotation equating to a full day’s passing. The designers aim to infuse time into space, making the telling of time an experience concurrent to an encompassed dimension. The gentle indication of time enabled by The Loop hopes to eliminate the potential stressors brought forth by clocks and their unsympathetic numbers, reimagining the relationship between time, space and people.
Operation & Structure
The Loop moves quietly along a modular track, carrying a softly glowing orb through the space. Its path is composed of 50 cm straight segments and 78.5 cm curved pieces, allowing the track to be assembled in different configurations to suit a variety of rooms and exhibition layouts. Suspended from the ceiling with adjustable steel wires, the height and orientation of the installation can be customised to the surrounding environment.
As the orb travels, it casts shifting light and shadows across walls and surfaces, creating a dynamic yet gentle visual rhythm. Visitors can observe and move around the light, noticing subtle changes in illumination and shadow over time. The modularity of the track encourages interaction and spatial exploration, allowing the installation to adapt seamlessly to each unique environment while maintaining its continuous, flowing orbit.
