Maak je eigen internet

What should the internet look like in ten years? Learn about the most pressing challenges and build your ideal online society.

Design by Studio Massa, photography by Ansel Lee

Everyone lives on the internet. But how do the laws of the World Wide Web work and who gets to decide? Discover the biggest digital dilemmas of today through a colorful machine which puts you in charge. For a moment, imagine yourself as president of the internet.

A broken dream

Major internet companies are establishing monopolies without any real transparency about how they operate. Fact-checkers are accused of censorship, while real censorship goes unnoticed. Rapidly evolving algorithms keep users furiously glued to their screens. And what exactly happens to our data? The ideal dreams of internet pioneers at the beginning of this millennium are no longer so glamorous. The web is more known for the polarization it causes than for the connection it brings. Before Big Tech gains complete online power, the question arises: what would our digital dream be now, if we were all in charge?

Web of values

"Maak je eigen internet" is an interactive experience where you can freely explore major themes using a creative representation of the internet. Learn from leading experts about the latest potential solutions to digital challenges. Just because solutions are still relatively unknown, doesn't mean they don't exist. Experience that nothing is black and white; everything has advantages and disadvantages, but you choose internet policy based on your prevailing values. The choice is always yours. You can delve into the themes that interest you, but if you dare to make a decision on each theme, you'll get to see your own version of the internet: with your own rules and values.

Collaboration

With a growing number of people consciously avoiding the news every year, journalism is being asked to grow and adapt so it can continue to inform. This project is a collaboration between designers with IT, gaming, and journalism backgrounds, to test a new possible solution to this problem. Can journalism approach people differently through an IT lens? This project aims to achieve this with a passion for creative research and hopeful solutions.
