It’s easier than ever to be online. But all this data also has a downside. The entire ICT sector emits more CO₂ worldwide than the aviation industry. Fortunately, we can reduce that footprint ourselves. With Data als onbekende vervuiler, we show you how.
The impact of data is impossible to ignore.
The Earth is warming, and humans have a major influence on this. This is caused by the large amount of greenhouse gases we pump into the atmosphere. Our data use also leads to COâ‚‚ emissions. Did you know that worldwide, the ICT sector has a bigger impact than aviation?
With the installation Data als onbekende vervuiler, we make this invisible impact of data visible. Large balloons represent the amount of COâ‚‚ released by certain actions. At the same time, we show what you can do about it yourself.
When you’re at work, you may unknowingly accelerate global warming — by sending emails, transferring files, and video calling. Luckily, there are simple things you can change. For example, calling instead of video conferencing or emailing. Or being more mindful about sending emails and saving files. In this way, you too can contribute to a clean, green, and livable world — with small actions you can easily take in your work or daily life.
This exhibition was designed in a circular way by the design studio Slijpstof, in collaboration with the Pilot duurzame CAO Rijk.
About Slijpstof
We believe that a circular society is impossible without behavioral change. But change is hard. That’s why we make circular choices feel more logical and natural.
How? By approaching the circular economy not only as a technical challenge, but also as a social one.
