Raincafé – smart water storage that connects

Weather conditions are increasingly impacting our lives. Periods of drought and heat are increasingly interspersed with heavy downpours. Retaining and reusing rainwater in public spaces is no longer a luxury, but a necessity. Raincafé, a co-creation of Cleantech Park Arnhem, ZUS, and Studio Floris Schoonderbeek, was born from the ambition to not only research sustainability issues but also make them visible and applicable.

a vibrant meeting place

This innovative, interactive installation collects and stores rainwater, making it available for everyday use—from watering green spaces to washing bicycles or even creating playful water features. At the same time, it creates a vibrant meeting place where people gather to work, have lunch, or simply enjoy the surroundings. Raincafé not only demonstrates how water can be managed intelligently but also encourages discussion and awareness: about how we use natural resources, both in the city and beyond. It's more than just a technical solution.

Dynamic system

With a capacity of 8,000 liters, Raincafé offers a substantial supply of water that is readily and easily accessible. The vertical, spiral-shaped water bag moves with the water it contains: a dynamic and visible system that encourages interaction. Its height creates sufficient pressure to draw water, allowing plants to be watered or children to play on hot days. The circular benches and tables surrounding the installation also make it a social gathering place where nature, people, and technology can connect.

About ZUS x Floris Schoonderbeek x Cleantech Park Arnhem

Raincafe is a collab between ZUS [Zones Urbaines Sensibles], Studio Floris Schoonderbeek (SFS) and Cleantech Park Arnhem. With cleantech park Arnhem as the proactive questionair and ZUS and SFS as spatial and product designers the raincafe is born as a visual and interactive rainwater storagetank. With Raincafe we created a chance to store and activate rainwater in urban environments. The Raincafe during the DDW is supported by Bureau Binnenstad Eindhoven.
