This project invites viewers to reflect on their relationship with social media. It translates young people’s stories into physical wellbeing products, offering an opportunity to share personal interpretations of how social media impacts mental wellbeing.
Social Media and Society
Personally, I am deeply concerned about the growing power of Big Tech companies, which, under the notion of capitalism, collect as much user data as possible in order to sell it to advertisers.
Social media platforms are designed to be addictive. The longer you stay on your phone, the more money flows into the pockets of Big Tech companies. The impact of this profit driven perspective is gradually becoming more apparent.
Documentaries and series such as 'The Social Dilemma' and 'Adolescence' show how enormous the societal impact of these Big Tech companies is (and continues to grow).
It's time to rethink the future
I believe that now is the time for us, to question what we consider ethically acceptable and unacceptable. We are at the beginning of a new societal shift, where we will seek more ethical and human centered solutions to wellbeing issues such as social media.
