Open Studio

The Design (of the Practice) is the Practice

Open Studio — © Modem / OK-RM

A design studio is more than the work it produces. Its structures, methods, values, and reason for being are themselves a form of design—an evolving process that shapes identity and meaning. Designing a practice isn't static; it is iterative, responsive and inseparable from the outputs it generates.

Open Studio

During Dutch Design Week Modem and OK-RM will host Open Studio; an alliance founded as an ongoing project of live inquiry into the less conventional approaches of independent design practice(s).
Across 48 hours, Open Studio will host a workspace for dialogue with independent practitioners and critical thinkers, creating a forum to embrace collective practice.

About Modem

Modem is an office for design and innovation committed to envisioning how forward-thinking companies and institutions can thrive amidst exponential change. Whether through research papers with institutions like Harvard GSD, MIT, and UC Berkeley, or through work with clients such as the European Commission, Chanel and OpenAI.

About OK-RM

OK-RM (Oliver Knight and Rory McGrath) are intent on pushing the potentialities of what a design practice can be. Based in London and working globally, OK-RM operates at the pivot point where attitude becomes form. Interrogating beliefs, procedures, behavioural, temporal and material realities. Extending the curiosity of OK-RM, InOtherWords was founded in 2015 as a means to further pursue collaborative exchange in book form. Their interest in pedagogical approaches has led them into multiple teaching, lecturing and exhibition forms.
