The beauty of a meeting between the power of community and the celebration of uniqueness made visible.

performance in motion — © artstudioFemke

This work, by ArtstudioFemke, is an 18m³ dynamic installation. A handcrafted machine that the artist sets in motion during performances. The work is inspired by the Mozaïek community, where the beauty of a dynamic community was striking. It is on display at Fuutlaan 12.

introduction

In this work, I explore the solidarity within my faith community. Within this, I emphasize the uniqueness of each individual. The installation consists of hanging sculptures in which spools of varied thread are incorporated into ceramic objects. The sculptures envelop and connect, inspired by natural forms. Some look like funnels capturing their surroundings, others resemble flames. Everything is interconnected and interacts with one another.

construction

At the center of the installation sits a spinning wheel on the floor, the only one not created by the artist, as it is a family heirloom. The other objects are supported by metal rods, threaded rods attached with hooks to a concrete mesh frame. The rods are encased in hand-turned, drilled pieces of wood. The design of these wooden components is based on the spinning wheel; each piece is unique. The spool holders and ceramic pieces are handmade and bolted together. This allows each element of this installation (from complete rods to individual pieces of wood) to be repositioned. In this way, the work celebrates uniqueness and transformation.

Performance and meaning

The installation comes to life during the performance: The threads from all the bobbins converge and are spun into a strong connection. The objects are set in motion by the spinning wheel operated by me, the artist; their rotating form emphasizes connection and movement.
Only when many threads are woven together does a strong thread emerge. This reflects the power of collaboration within a diverse community: a web of lives and individuals where, through connection, beautiful and resilient things are created.

About Artstudiofemke

I, Femke van Wageningen, am a young artist educator who graduated from ArtEZ Arnhem in the spring of 2025 from the Visual Arts and Design Teacher program. Working as a high school visual arts teacher, I want to further develop my skills in the coming years and start a ceramics studio. This way, I can continue doing what I love most: playing with clay by handcrafting art objects and artistic and playful utensils, and share this love with others.
