CRUX is a sustainability toolkit that invites digital designers to pause and rethink the footprint of their creations. Through two interactive workshops and a simple carbon-estimation plugin, it helps design teams uncover how their everyday choices ripple across users, businesses, and the planet.
Designing for Digital Impact
CRUX started from a simple insight: every digital design has a physical impact. From websites to apps, every click consumes energy and leaves a trace on the planet. Yet, most design teams rarely consider this. CRUX brings that awareness into the creative process, not by guilt or complexity, but through collaboration, reflection, and practical tools that make sustainability part of everyday design.
From Reflection to Action
The CRUX toolkit includes two FigJam-based workshops and a sustainability checker plugin. The Six Thinking Hats and Ripple Impact workshops help teams evaluate their projects from multiple perspectives (user, business, environment, and systems) while facing real-world constraints. The plugin estimates COâ‚‚ emissions per page view, powered by The Green Web Foundation API, encouraging teams to make small but impactful design optimisations.
Empowering Designers to Lead Change
CRUX is built to help designers take responsibility for the environmental footprint of their digital work. It transforms sustainability from an abstract goal into a design habit, one that values balance, awareness, and shared accountability. CRUX aims to inspire creative professionals to see sustainable design not as a limitation, but as an opportunity to design for lasting, positive impact.
