Fragmented explores the hidden potential of Belgian blue limestone waste. Through research and design, discarded fragments from stone production are reimagined as new material sources, revealing aesthetic, cultural, and ecological value within industrial leftovers.
Traces of Value in Stone Waste
Fragmented originates from a research into the life cycle of Belgian blue limestone from quarry to production to urban use. During production, large amounts of valuable stone offcuts are generated, yet most of these fragments end up as crushed aggregates in concrete or asphalt. As a designer, I chose to focus on this stage, where the potential for change is greatest.
By approaching the waste container as a new kind of quarry, I treat discarded fragments as a renewed raw material. Rather than forcing the stone into a predefined form, its irregular shapes and textures guide the design process. Working around each piece preserves its integrity and reveals a new, unexpected aesthetic that could not emerge from a blank page.
