Five Heritage Principles for Sustainable Construction

Nico de Bont is a contractor specialized in monumental buildings. A few years ago, they made a conscious decision to renovate exclusively using sustainable and biobased methods. So what happens when we combine the knowledge of the past with the insights and techniques of today?

Forgotten Wisdom

The construction sector stands at a crossroads. Everyone feels it: things need to change. We want to build in ways that are more sustainable, healthier, more socially responsible, and future-proof.

But in our pursuit of innovation, we sometimes forget something important: the knowledge we already had.

For centuries, people built structures that worked naturally. They breathed, insulated, and ventilated—without installations, without waste. Buildings that cooperated with nature, not against it.

At Nico de Bont, we believe the future of construction lies not only in new technology, but in rediscovering the wisdom of the past. We call this: building on centuries-old knowledge.
