Through Bestraat, the city becomes a source of materials, textures, and patterns, which are transformed into new objects. These different elements are used as building blocks for new designs.
Bestraat Furniture
These furniture pieces are built around the commonly used 30 × 30 cm paving tile, placing a material often discarded and regarded as waste in a new context. The combination of paving tiles determines the function of each object.
The first piece in the collection, the Stoeptegel Stoel (‘Paving Tile Chair’), uses 30 × 30 and 15 × 30 tiles as its seat and backrest. The beechwood frame is developed through a scalable design system, with proportions adapted during the design process to suit different functions while maintaining a shared language across the collection.
Bestraat Carpet
This carpet is based on a surface made from used paving stones. Once part of a street, these stones were arranged into a new pattern that reflects their familiar use in public streets. The resulting surface was then documented and printed onto the carpet.
