Handmade from offcuts.

Maurice's parts are intended for efficient manufacturing by assembling offcuts and leftover pieces from industrial production. Various types of wood (hardwood or panels), and sometimes other discarded materials, can therefore be combined to form a functional and qualitative piece of furniture. Like all furniture by STRYD, Maurice is manufactured entirely from sratch by hand.

Brutalist logic

Maurice's design follows an ethic, not an aesthetic. The aim is to apply a Brutalist logic for furniture production, adapted to today's socio-economic and environmental context: design in service of daily life, using materials in their raw state, and produced through methods that enable an intuitive relation between subject and object. The choice to reclaim wood or metal, as opposed to plastic, is a conscious act of empowerment for the end-user, providing objects made from organic materials that can be repaired.

Bring us your offcuts.

This project invites the viewer to reflect on the common perception of furniture by addressing a global need for waste reduction, rather than a desire for objects made from new materials. A large part of off-cuts and wasted wood is perfectly usable, but usually thrown away due to the economic inefficiency of up-cycling. Therefore, the aim when making Maurice is to salvage as much wood as possible from industrial partners, distributors, and individuals.
