Folds Unfolded

The creative process behind Aya is shaped by experiments with materials and surfaces, moving ideas from one medium into another. A delicate line often remains as a visual connection between these experiments.

Aya grew from this way of working. A small sheet of paper was folded and unfolded again. Each movement left a trace in the surface.

Even when the paper is opened again and given space to breathe, the folds do not disappear. They stay visible, like a memory written into the surface.

These traces were then translated into lines and became the first sketch for the rug.

Material and Experience

Aya is made to be experienced both visually and through touch. New Zealand wool gives the rug a soft and natural feel, while selected areas of Tencel add a smooth, silky feel and a subtle shine.

The rug is hand-tufted with great attention to detail. Different pile heights create depth and make the surface change with light, shadow and perspective. This invites people to move closer, touch the rug and discover its subtle details.

From Aya to Reni Rugs

Aya is part of the soon-to-launch rug label Reni Rugs, founded by textile artist Irena Egelkraut. The label grows from the same experimental approach behind Aya: exploring materials, surfaces and emotions, then translating them into objects for the interior.

Reni Rugs brings this way of working into a wider design context. The rugs are created as expressive pieces between art and design, combining material, craftsmanship and emotion to shape the feeling of a space.
