Like magic, a material is transformed; the art of alchemy lies at jewellery’s core. Yet in a narrative of metal scarcity, what does the future hold? And how can bio-design offer jewellers new opportunities beyond the constraints once posed?
Scarcity
Metal scarcity poses significant challenges for many industries. This is particularly acute for jewellers, who face rising costs and rapidly depleting supplies. These issues underpin this project, which speculates on the future of contemporary jewellery in a limited precious-metal landscape.
Biological Alchemy
Crafting Impermanence explores how biodesign and biomaterials can build resilience for future jewellers. Utilising locally sourced and grown materials such as wool waste, the project aims to inspire a shift from extractive practices to more regenerative methods of making. Through co-design with nature and by accepting the materials’ impermanence, the project embraces the feral aspect of nature, celebrating the living nature of the pieces as they transform, decay, and change over time.
Beyond Resilience. Towards Ecological Harmony.
Crafting Impermanence seeks to challenge conventional notions of value within the medium of jewellery. Shifting away from precious metals, the collection suggests that new worth can be found in the ephemeral qualities of biomaterials. Designed as ecological amulets, the pieces serve as mindful reminders to slow down, observe, listen, and reconnect with nature while honouring the more-than-human systems that surround us.
