Around The Table

Translating familiar spaces of interaction, presence, and conversation into spatial objects.

Through light fixtures, benches and tables, six design students from Design Academy Eindhoven with their exhibited works choose the environment formed around the objects as the collective inspiration point.

Designing objects through situations

In our designs, we favor looking at the negative space that forms around our objects, rather than solely focusing on the objects themselves. Hence the name: Around the Table.

The works are interlinked through their embedded functions: tables, benches, and light objects, all coming together to form a sense of familiarity for the viewer.

Light objects by Pauline Strandt and Virginia Benedetti illuminate the hall; Niels RLG and Gabrielle Moine offer all-around seating and dining explorations; Alice Meneghetti creates a multilayered space for immersion and reflection; and Martins Mezulis reverses the meaning of a well-known traffic symbol.

The collective questioned how an object can influence a night out, a dinner party, or the morning rush in the kitchen. And, furthermore, what happens when these everyday situations and conversations become the starting point for the objects themselves?

About Around 4.4

Around 4.4 is a collective consisting of six students from Design Academy Eindhoven. Originally formed from two separate collectives sharing studios in the same building, the name refers to each room’s address ending with the number 4.
