Designed for everyday interiors, the NANO Stool can work as a compact seat, side table, or occasional piece. The project grew from childhood memories and an interest in combining materials that are rarely seen together.
A Different Kind of Stool
My stool is an object of today. It is made entirely from recycled and recyclable materials. The seat is crafted from wood, whose lathed form allows for a perfectly curved, comfortable surface. The legs are made of Karlite: a waterproof and colourful, unexpected material choice that gives the piece its distinctive character. The wood slabs and offcuts are locally sourced in Hungary, where the stools are fabricated in a small workshop on the outskirts of Budapest. Karlite is produced in Delft and transported to Hungary using the most eco-conscious method available: ridesharing.
Both the hardwoods used - oak and walnut - and Karlite are long-lasting, sturdy, and solid materials. Responding to user needs, the stools are designed in two different sizes, ensuring comfortable use across all ages.
Essentially, a stool is a chair - a seat without a back or arms - and as such, it is meant to be comfortable. I posed questions while designing the stool: How long can one sit comfortably on a stool? How many different ways can a stool be used? And how can these traditional pieces of furniture find their place in a contemporary space?
