Two metal sculptures with a latex skin slowly breathe through a mechanism. The materials change and age over time. Through their breathing, the sculptures move between lifeless object and organism, reflecting on vulnerability and impermanence.
Impermanence
In my work, I explore impermanence and the visible traces of time. The sculptures consist of a metal skeleton and a latex skin. Both materials change through time and use: latex discolours, sags and wrinkles, while the metal slowly develops signs of ageing. The sculptures are therefore never completely finished, but continue to evolve.
Breathing
A mechanism slowly brings the sculptures to life. Occasionally, air is blown into the latex skin, after which it slowly escapes again. Each breath is temporary and marks a moment of change. Over time, the sculptures gradually lose their ability to hold the air.
