Ornament as Operator: Machine Genealogies Through

archival embroidery and responsive light

At DDW, GLINA³ traces a speculative genealogy from archival embroidery and Jacquard punched cards to Python. Three responsive light screens reveal how textile instructions become code and change through visitors’ proximity.

Archival Embroidery

At Dutch Design Week 2026, Amsterdam-based GLINA³ presents Ornament as Operator, a research installation tracing a speculative genealogy from archival embroidery and Jacquard punched cards to contemporary programming. Embroidered patterns carry sequences, repetitions and material knowledge that can be read as structured instructions.

Python Code

GLINA³ translates an archival embroidery pattern into machine-readable data and Python code. Three landscape LED modules with 3D-printed ceramic light diffusers reveal the textile pattern, its computational interpretation and its behaviour within a responsive system. The installation connects textile heritage, digital fabrication and machine production.

Responsive Light

Visitors activate the interactive installation by moving between five centimetres and one metre from the screens. Their proximity changes the pattern’s light, rhythm and movement in real time. Historical textile knowledge becomes a physical experience linking craft, code, technology and the human body.

About GLINA³

GLINA³ is an Amsterdam-based research and production practice founded by industrial designers Aleksandra Chargeshvili and Timo Bega. Working across digital fabrication and material culture, the studio explores how contemporary technologies shape the objects, environments and forms of knowledge around us. Through research, 3D printed production, education and collaboration, GLINA³ brings code, material processes and cultural histories into physical experience.
