Material & Process

Silhouette explores the relationship between material, process and the objects we use every day. The candle holder is cast in recycled aluminium, leaving its surface raw and largely unpolished. Rather than removing imperfections, the design embraces them as part of the object’s character. Small variations, marks and traces from the casting process make every piece slightly different. The result is a functional object that carries visible evidence of how it was made. With Silhouette, Tom Schoonhoven looks at how industrial techniques can be used to create objects that still feel personal, tactile and familiar. The candle holder is designed to become part of the everyday environment while retaining a strong sense of materiality and craftsmanship.
