wear | us is a regenerative approach to clothesmaking inspired by the New European Bauhaus.
It is a set of luxury basics ready to be made or purchased, a scaffolded learning path, and a program for neighborhood-based production, with a nature-first approach.
the project
wear | us is a creative response to three self-imposed constraints: compostable materials, noble economy and scaffolded making.
Compostable materials inspire design solutions that mimic nature, where the concept of waste does not exist. Our exhibition at the DDW focuses on this constraint.
Noble economy places boundaries on the three sides of clothesmaking.
Compensation boundaries ensure that makers earn beyond industry standards, while effort pricing rewards prosumers. Noble economy also means low profit margins and a constant quest to reduce inequalities.
With wear | us you can express your noble nature by enjoying the work of masters at a price they deserve, or by buying a kit at near-cost and transform it, with our help, into luxury basics.
Scaffolded making is a neighborhood-level learning/making program that allows any person, no matter their skills, to start learning and making for themselves and for those they love. wear | us is an open space for those who love to make clothes and want to get better at it.
wear | us is a design as policy project by starglide.
the exhibition
We are at Klokgebouw all week with "betulla", our first line of luxury basic in an exhibition & live performance on the principles of nature that inspire us.
Nature is a cycle, not a circle
Nature is cyclical and transforms waste into nutrients that will benefit new, immensely diverse forms of life. Our luxury basics go back into compost, to feed plants and restart the cycle of life, whatever it wants to become.
Nature loves planned obsolescence
Every form of life has a well defined deadline, and this is what makes life resilient and changing. We design for durability, but we accept that nothing lasts forever. We make our garments compostable to recognize their inevitable end, and give them a graceful transition back to Nature.
Nature does not scale
Life thrives in local ecosystem with organisms that replicate, and plants as foundational entities. wear | us privileges hemp for its ability to regenerate soil and for the variety that can offer: from food, to medicine, to clothes. We focus on all plants for their ability to increase biodiversity, and to produce fabric, colors and food. We keep production at neighbourhood level whenever possible.
quiet proactivism
wear | us is happy to spread its quiet proactivism into third spaces across Europe, and is looking for your support.
Please support our first crowdfunding campaign, to consolidate our presence in Belgium and Croatia.
If you own or manage a third space with extra room available, consider installing wear | us as a program in your premises. We will provide support, materials, access to our platforms and extra visibility.
If you like the idea and have capital available, let's have a conversation on how to partner, to reinforce a noble economy.
