Am II Alive and Re:Subjected

Emergence invites you into the world of synthetic cell research and shows you the outcome of an open-ended exploration into the future of materials.

As Emergence Delft, art and tech students create works that make complex and hidden technologies visible and invite the public to reflect on them.

Am II Alive?

‘Am II Alive? is an immersive installation that invites you into the world of synthetic cell research. Inspired by work from the Cees Dekker Lab, it explores a new kind of life. Man made, built from non-living components, and still unfolding in labs today. Unlike natural cells, these synthetic versions did not emerge from any living entity, challenging what we think we know about the origins of life.

Through shifting visuals, sound and movement, the installation does not only aim to explain but mostly aims to spark curiosity. It offers an entry point into the science while opening space for questions, feelings, and reflection. What does it mean to be alive? Who decides? And how does this emerging technology shape the future we are all a part of?

Re:Subjected

Re:Subjected is the outcome of an open-ended exploration into the future of materials. Developed within Platform Project 4, the work emerged from a collaborative process between students and artist Laura Elidedt Rodriguez. What began as a series of lab-like explorations into material science and speculative fabrics, grew into a conceptual shift: what if materials were not passive or lifeless, but active participants in our world?

Re:Subjected questions the systems that have taught us to dominate and consume, and instead imagines materials as companions with agency and presence. It asks what kind of futures become possible when we choose to listen rather than extract.

About Emergence Delft: art and tech students.

Emergence Delft is a Dream Team of students from TU Delft and regional art academies. Together, we create art that reflects on impactful technologies. Art helps us make these technologys and its impacts visible and tangible. We work voluntarily for one year, from idea to exhibition, on projects that are entirely self-initiated and self-sustained. Our interactive works spark curiosity, invite dialogue, and encourage reflection on the opportunities and risks of a digital society.
