FLOCC: closed-loop cotton flock fibre

FLOCC is a Scotland-Netherlands collaboration with MYB Textiles, transforming cotton textile waste clips into natural flock fibre.

Through cross-border collaboration, we transform MYB Textiles’ waste cotton lace clips into electrostatic cellulose flock fibre. FLOCC embodies circular design, turning a manufacturing by-product into a rare, non-synthetic flock for surface and textile design.

What is Flock?

Textile flocking is a decorative process where tiny fibres, called flock, are applied to an adhesive-coated surface, creating a raised, velvety texture that adds softness and tactility. Historically, flock was originally used in wallpapers to imitate luxurious velvet wall hangings, made from waste wool fibres ground into powder and applied to paper — an early example of material reuse in design. Today, most flock fibre is synthetic, but offers an eco-friendly alternative. Inspired by Maison du Flock, bold approach, we invite you to come along to see how we’ve used it.

Printed Cotton Flock on Heritage Lace

We are showcasing cotton flock fibre, handmade paper crafted entirely from MYB Textiles’ woven production offcuts (cotton clips), and flocked lace fabrics. The flock is printed back onto MYB’s heritage lace fabrics, adding texture and colour and creating contemporary textiles that celebrate the synergy between traditional lace manufacture and innovative flock techniques. Currently, the fibre is available in two natural tones — Ecru and Grey (from mixed fibres). Additional colour can be introduced via printed adhesive, offering further creative possibilities. Expanding the colour range remains an ongoing exploration.

Our Journey

The FLOCC project began in July 2024 with support from the EU WORTH Partnership Project. This led to exhibiting during Milan Design Week in April 2025, followed by inclusion in the Future Fabrics Expo’s Innovation Hub (FFE) in June 2025, and it is now travelling worldwide through FFE’s collaboration with Performance Days.
We recently raised over £10K through a Crowdfunding UK campaign, generously matched by Creative Scotland. WORTH funding helped us launch the project, while crowdfunding enabled processing larger volumes of cotton clips, hosting workshops and mill tours, and producing our first batch of cotton flock fibre.
We’re excited to see creative studios and companies experiment with this closed-loop material. Come and explore how you might use it — we look forward to sharing the FLOCC project with you at Dutch Design Week!
