Circulair Warenhuis and designer Max Lipsey work in Leiden to create tableware and terrazzo from residual materials. Their project shows how reclaimed resources are transformed into sustainable designs, highlighting the value of reuse and circular design.
Straal & BODEM
'The Circular Journey in Images: Tableware and Terrazzo' shows how residual materials are transformed into meaningful design. Circulair Warenhuis (Leiden) works with designer Max Lipsey on two series: the Straal tableware line and the BODEM terrazzo. Unsold yet intact tableware is sandblasted on the exterior, creating a calm, cohesive line with a distinctive character. For BODEM, broken tableware is milled into aggregate; this is pressed and finished into terrazzo that retains visible colour and history. The installation is a three-tier display case with transparent walls, making each step visible—from incoming material streams and selection to processing and final result. In this way, the power of reuse becomes tangible, the beauty of imperfection visible, and the value of collaboration with local makers clear.
