ROOTS presents ‘Plantbased’ at Piet Hein Eek. We explore how design can grow from the soil—rethinking food, materials and (design) mindset. In a living landscape, we show why design must move beyond extraction and how regenerative practices can shape a sustainable future.
From Soil to Design: A Regenerative Vision
ROOTS Exhibition returns to Dutch Design Week with Plantbased, presented at Piet Hein Eek. As an award-winning platform that is setting the new standard in design, ROOTS asks: how can design grow from the soil in a time when COâ‚‚, biodiversity loss and ecological breakdown dominate the global agenda?
Our project explores the connections between what we grow, what we eat, and what we create—rethinking food, materials and design mindset.
Upstairs, visitors are invited to recline on modular plantbased seating, surrounded by living tropical plants and listen to what nature is trying to tell us. The story of the soil and the impact of our food choices on the environment. This immersive moment invites reflection on what we are losing and what we might regenerate.
Downstairs, we present a regenerative world: a living landscape of materials, objects and ideas that are not extractive, but cyclical and nourishing. Plantbased is not a protest, but a proposition: design differently, design with care and return what we use to the soil. Here, soil meets soul.
