Made from a millions year old belgian stone. This Sill Bench carries its own history. Now shaped to a bench every use creates a natural patina over time that keeps on contributing to its elaborative history. Filled with chisel marks and fossils this bench is full of ‘life’.
A bench full of history
As a child, I was constantly outside. I grew up in a small village where playing outdoors was simply a way of life. Stone sills were a quiet part of that world, places to sit, lean, and gather. Each sill was different: some polished, others bush-hammered or marked with relief. Every sill carried its own story.
This Sill Bench is made of Petit Granit, a uniquely Belgian natural stone that is still quarried locally today. This bench is both a tribute and a protest, a response to the way Belgian homes are built today. A once-cherished material, used in windowsills, staircases and countertops, is now often seen as outdated. Instead, it’s replaced with cheaper, less sustainable alternatives like concrete.
It invites the viewer to reflect on the materials we build with, where they come from, what they leave behind and to reconnect with the raw, tactile experiences of childhood.
