A new life for wind turbines

Rewind Exhibition — © Nick Bookelaar

Inside the nacelle, every component—from bolts and bearings to circuit boards and transformers—holds new potential. By displaying them and designing with reuse, Vattenfall explores new applications. Together, we look ahead to a circular future, both within and beyond the wind sector.

Next step in our design journey

At Vattenfall, we believe sustainability is not only about generating fossil-free energy. It’s also about what happens next. Following our repurposing of a nacelle into tiny houses and turning blades into floating structures at DDW 2024, we now take the next step. By diving inside the nacelle - housing on top of a wind turbine tower that contains essential components such as the generator and gearbox - we take apart decommissioned wind turbines into smaller components to uncover new possibilities.

Together, we think beyond

This initiative is not just a technical exercise. It’s an invitation to join our creative journey and explore surprising possibilities together. With designers and visitors of Dutch Design Week, we search for new ways to apply turbine components in sectors such as mobility, agriculture, housing — and beyond.

By designing with used components as the starting point, we make the untapped value of used wind turbine components visible and aim to spark circular solutions.

The future of energy is circular

To meet the growing demand for energy in a sustainable way, wind turbines are essential. While generating renewable energy, we must also ensure that the entire life cycle of a wind farm is as sustainable as possible. Circularity plays a key role—not only when designing new wind turbines, but also when dismantling used ones. With this year’s exhibition, we aim to help pave the way for the circular reuse of wind turbine parts. In partnership with Dutch Design Foundation, we co-create, experiment, and share ideas that invite everyone to look beyond—and envision a circular future together.

For this exhibition, we are working in close partnership with Business in Wind. The components displayed throughout the exhibition have been made available thanks to Business in Wind.
