Five multidisciplinary teams showcase their innovative ideas for the future of the watermill landscape. See how the history of this area contributes to a climate-adaptive landscape where nature, agriculture, recreation, and heritage come together.

The challenge

During this Design Challenge, five multidisciplinary teams conducted design-based research into the future of the Dommel Valley. Their imaginative perspectives demonstrate how spatial design, inspired by cultural-historical structures, can contribute to current societal challenges. We hope to inspire municipalities, provinces, the national government, water boards, farmers, residents, and initiatives.

Watermill landscapes as inspiration

Watermills have had a major influence on the Brabant stream valleys for centuries, but that knowledge has mostly been lost. Today, the mills are primarily viewed as heritage, while their historical role in water management offers opportunities for climate adaptation. The designs explore how the old watermill system can once again contribute to water buffering and storage.

The case study: the Dommel Valley

The challenge focuses on the stream valley between Son and Boxtel. Although many original watermills have disappeared, history offers starting points for a future-proof landscape. The designs show how this area can become an example for the entire Dommel and other comparable regions.
