How does a body raised in a dust-free environment imagine a world full of dust? Using dust as a metaphor for technological encryption, this project speculates on the hidden materiality, vulnerability, and remains of data storage.

Material Conditions

The project looks at the physical conditions behind data storage, focusing on the clean environments, materials, and infrastructures involved in the production and maintenance of digital data.

Dust within a Dust-Free Zone

Dust becomes a way to think about the tension between data security and control. In contrast to the dust-free environments required for technological production, dust represents what cannot be fully controlled, contained, or eliminated. Through field research and speculative thinking, the project reimagines data storage not as something purely digital or immaterial, but as a physical system shaped by materials, environments, and processes of control. It asks what it might mean to reclaim data within these conditions.

About Xiaotong Li

Xiaotong Li is a researcher and visual artist who works across design, video and performance. Her practice follows faint sensory imprint beneath systemic grand narratives, from the perspectives of non-human entities to the silent objects within war game engines. She interested in digital forensic, speculative archaeology and physical traces such as scares, marks, ruins, dust, shadows, and she is always looking for ways to engage with unseen narratives.
