Light as a design material

PRISMA1.0 is a sculptural light object exploring light as a responsive material through analogue interaction. Developed from an interest in light as an everyday element that often goes unnoticed, the project explores how something intangible can become material for design. Through touch and movement, shifting colours and optical effects emerge, creating a playful, contemplative interaction with light. Scientific principles and material experimentation shape the object, revealing the changing qualities of light through perception.

Forming the Light

PRISMA1.0 combines transparent and reflective materials in a constructed form that changes how light passes through and interacts with its surfaces. Through movement, colours, reflections, patterns, and optical effects appear, disappear, and transform. These effects emerge directly from the physical relationship between light, material, and construction, without digital intervention. By combining scientific principles with craftsmanship, PRISMA1.0 makes the behaviour of light tangible through analogue interaction.

Living with Light

The interaction with PRISMA1.0 is based on touch and physical movement, allowing the object to continuously change as it is turned and rotated. Different positions reveal shifting colour hues, patterns, reflections, and optical effects, making each interaction slightly different. As an everyday lighting object, it functions as a lamp while inviting touch, observation, and a slower engagement with light. Rather than treating light only as a source of illumination, PRISMA1.0 presents it as a design material to be noticed, explored, and appreciated, offering a different way of perceiving the light that surrounds us in everyday life.
