De hoed van verwondering

An NWO initiative in which art, design and science strengthen one another.

The hat and its matching shoulder jewel emerged from a blend of new technology, innovation, textile craftsmanship and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Prinsjesdag: a symbol of collaboration

Minister of Education, Culture and Science Rianne Letschert was the first ever to wear the hat on Prinsjesdag 2026. The design symbolises the power of collaboration between science and art and the importance of working across disciplines.

The Hat of Wonder emerged not in a fashion atelier, but under a microscope. There, chemist Wim Noorduin (AMOLF, UvA) discovered remarkable, flower-like structures. Designer, artist and researcher Malou Beemer translated them into a eyecatching, wearable design.

The background

Pure curiosity lies at the heart of every scientific discovery. Many major innovations begin with a single question: how does this actually work?
Wim Noorduin’s fundamental chemistry research into microscopic flower shapes ultimately led to a method for detecting toxic lead, now used worldwide. The police and the Netherlands Forensic Institute (NFI) also use the invention in forensic investigations.
The hat tells the story of fundamental research: how wonder can lead to real societal impact. It also tells the story of interdisciplinary collaboration: how cross-pollination builds an innovative society.

About Malou Beemer
