DEWA & DEWI 2025, led by Thailand’s Department of International Trade Promotion, turns agricultural and industrial waste into new products. Since 2013, it has produced over 200 prototypes, showing how creativity can reduce environmental impact and spark new business opportunities.
Origins
Since 2013, DEWA & DEWI has shown how waste from farms and factories can inspire new design. The project was developed in response to the growing urgency of environmental issues and the need to utilize limited resources more effectively. It began with agricultural by-products and natural waste, later expanded to industrial waste, and was driven by the belief that through design and innovation, Thai entrepreneurs could create products that are both sustainable and competitive.
Traditions
The 2025 design concept, "Harmony of Traditions: Bangkok 1940s–1970s," explores a period when Art Deco and Mid-Century modernism blended with Thai craftsmanship. This era balanced traditional skills with Western influences, creating a distinct cultural landscape. Artisans practiced crafts such as wickerwork, banana leaf designs, and floral garlands, preserving knowledge passed through generations and reinforcing ties between people and their environment. At the same time, Bangkok embraced new architecture and art, blending modern simplicity with traditional motifs. Marketplaces flourished as Thai and Chinese communities came together, reflecting a vibrant coexistence of cultures.
This design concept aligns with the exhibition theme, 'Harmony in Circling: For a Sustainable Future – Designing Balance through Endless Return.' Just as daily life in Thailand once moved in natural cycles of making, using, and giving back, these traditions now inspire new approaches to sustainable design.
Future
Under the theme Crafting Sustainnovation Future, DEWA & DEWI 2025 aims to show how sustainability and innovation can move forward together. Entrepreneurs experiment with new ways to work with their leftover and discarded materials, turning them into designs that carry both environmental and market value. The project looks beyond products, emphasizing a mindset of responsibility, creativity, and long-term growth. By encouraging this change, DEWA & DEWI hopes to make small yet lasting improvements that help Thai entrepreneurs build a greener economy that can stand confidently on the global stage.
