Singing Soil

Soil biodiversity data translated to an immersive experience.

Studio Metaform

What does the soil sound like, and what stories does it hold? Step into the immersive sound and light installation Singing Soil, where scientific data from nematodes makes the hidden impact of land use on biodiversity audible. By Studio Metaform and Wageningen University & Research.

Immersive yourself in Dutch soil

Three soil-topped plinths house speakers that emit soundscapes and reactive lighting, driven by nematode data. Mist drifts through the space, echoing the Dutch landscape’s atmospheric qualities. The work immerses viewers within the soil itself, making the hidden impacts of land use on biodiversity tangible.

Art-science as tool for discussion

This art-science project has been used as an educational tool to facilitate group discussion on the topic of land use and soil biodiversity in the Netherlands. Studio Metaform hosted a workshop at EnergieKas in September 2025 with participants from the municipality of The Hague, universities, neighbours and residents, policy advisors, and farmers.
