Strijp-S first sustainable building opens its doors. Matchbox uses captured CO2 as a raw material for a healthy building. Step inside and experience timber construction with all your senses.
Architecture which gives more than it takes. That's the Matchbox.
Matchbox is the first building in Strijp-S that is made almost entirely from bio-based materials. It is a progressive example of timber construction. By using so much wood as a building material, the building stores more CO2 than is released during construction. This is remarkable, because usually it is the other way around. It is an important step towards sustainable
construction. In the heart of Strijp-S, where the Philips factories once dominated, a new story is unfolding. Matchbox draws on the rational, no-nonsense aesthetics of the factories—clear, functional, honest—and translates them to the present day. The design of Matchbox adds something new to Strijp-S: a soft, human touch.
Matchbox is not an experiment, but a direction. An invitation to the city to build differently, with an eye to the future.
