A stool design that challenges the linear relationship between furniture and architecture

W-Stool

Yeraz Kortun, an Interior Architecture and Furniture Design student from the Royal Academy of Art The Hague (KABK), presents W-Stool, a furniture piece that brings architectural structures into the scale of furniture.

W-Stool: Fully Demountable Aluminum Stool Design

The W-Stool aims to flip or even turn completely upside down the relationship between furniture and architecture which often gets perceived as linear. Inspired by the structural W-beams used in construction, the design questions the perception of architecture as permanent and fixed by translating its elements into a lightweight, fully demountable object. Through its construction, W-Stool explores how furniture can carry, reinterpret, and transform architectural qualities within the space it inhabits.

The W-Stool is composed of laser-cut aluminum components that can be easily slotted together without permanent fixings. Each element is designed for disassembly and reassembly, emphasizing temporality and adaptability. The use of aluminum allows for a lightweight yet structurally stable object, making transportation and installation straightforward also making the piece fully recyclable.

About Yeraz Kortun

Yeraz Kortun is an artist and designer based in the Netherlands. She is currently studying Interior Architecture and Furniture Design at the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague (KABK), and followed an exchange program at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). Her practice spans furniture, spatial installations, writing, and material research, exploring the relationship between objects and space through material experimentation. Her work has been exhibited in the Netherlands, the US, and Türkiye.
