Kruisstraat Design District

Of Essential Interest to the Dutch culture

Kruisstraat Design District 2025 — © KDD

An open and collective exhibition exploring the phrase “essential interest to Dutch culture” — a requirement that many non-EU creatives must meet to remain in the country.

Kruisstraat 185-A

A temporary design exhibition created by and for people who have experience of the visa application process as non-EU residents in the Netherlands. Taking place during Dutch Design Week 2025, KDD explores the phrase “essential interest to Dutch culture” — a requirement that many non-EU creatives must meet to remain in the country.

This exhibition and public programme aim to highlight the breadth of contributions from non-EU creatives to Dutch Design Week and reclaim that phrase as a sequence of questions: What makes an individual’s work essential and is culture something that can be measured through individual contributions?

KDD invites designers to co-create an open exhibition featuring contributions from creatives with lived experience of the visa process. The result will be a public presentation of design, memory, and identity rooted in Kruisstraat — a vibrant, multicultural street shaped by the very communities that this exhibition seeks to center.
