An edible mission. More than Packaging_

Our goal is a future where nothing goes to waste, not even the packaging.

Mycelium packaging and Algae foil

Edible. Nutritious. Circular. – Designed by nature, eaten by humans, returned to Earth. In this development, Andrea Brittnek DLA and Kata Lagzi combine Algae foil with Mycelium packaging to create aesthetic and functional objects.

Mycelium & Algae Packagings for Well-being_

Our new project is a collaboration of two separate earlier developments and their integration to the concept of Health & Well-being. The use of mycelium sheets and algae films creates a new perspective, blending stability with flexibility and sustainability with nourishment.
Mycelium and Agar foil are the questions, the hypothesis and the solutions. Fungi and Algae are with us all the time, weaving their way around the universe, filling the void, feeding the continuity necessary for existence. They give back to Mother Nature what they temporarily borrow. In this project, the fusion of this two materials creates objects, packagings and reliefs that symbolize protection, transparency, and interconnection.
A tree often invites us to embrace it, feeling its natural calming power. The forms and surfaces of mycelium and algae represent this embrace – symbolizing the relationships between fungi and algae, between people, and between humans and nature.

More than Packaging_

The aesthetics of the organic surface, the natural shades of the materials and the edibility of the mycelium we used could open up a new perspective in packaging culture. Which, in addition to global circular sustainability, could also present a solution to public health concerns. Algae are ideal for combining with this organic material. Our aim with this collaboration is to create mycelium packaging that can be consumed after the food or product stored in it has been used. To keep the outer surface of packaging clean for human consumption, it needs to be protected from external influences. A translucent protective surface made from a species of red seaweed, which can be easily removed from the outside of the mycelium, is ideal for this purpose, and is also edible, nutritious or compostable.
As researchers, developers and designers, we aim to invent products that can offer a new perspective for the Thriving Planet and humanity in the future. We also focus on reducing packaging waste.

Fusion of Materials_

Within the An edible mission. project, alongside the functional design approach, we are also working on a more artistic, expressive and metaphorical field called Fusion of Materials_. We create objects and spatial compositions made of overlapping, folded, sewn, or glued sheets of mycelium, combined with translucent or sometimes tinted algae films. These films act as windows, revealing layers and spaces, much like the protective structure of a puparium, where mycelium forms the frame and algae provides transparency, allowing light to enter and inviting deeper understanding.
These artistic structures evoke both urban environments and intimate family-like embraces, reminding us that survival and happiness rely on harmony with nature. Made entirely from organic materials, these creations highlight the importance of building a sustainable coexistence between humans and nature – a fusion that must be preserved for the future.

About Andrea Brittnek DLA & Kata Lagzi

The collaboration of Andrea and Kata – designers, artists, and university professors, lecturers – offers new perspectives on working with organic materials. Their passion for visual communication, sustainability, and functional design merges with unique artistic identities. Through lectures, workshops, and exhibitions they not only share their vision but also pass on practical experience, inspiring audiences and embedding these methods in international education.
