"Use Like Play" rethinks household objects as sites of curiosity. It's a mechanical bell where a small gear sets a rhythm in motion. More than a tool, the project aims to balance useful and playful - inviting people to pause, touch, and rediscover joy in everyday rituals.
Use Like Play
Use Like Play aims to expand the boundaries of functionality by balancing the useful and the playful. It rethinks household products not as mere tools, but as interactive companions that spark curiosity, offer small surprises, and bring rituals into daily life. In a world where efficiency dominates, the joy of use is often overlooked. To âuse like playâ means turning everyday gestures into moments of delight, transforming routine into exploration, and giving people the chance to pause, interact, and rediscover joy.
The design takes the form of a mechanical bell that can be mounted on a door, wall, or placed on a table with a stand. Instead of pressing a button, users turn a small gear to activate a linear mechanism that rings the bell, transforming a functional gesture into a playful one. While it began as a doorbell, it was never meant to stay that way. It can also serve as a morning call, a dining table service bell, or simply a tactile object that adds surprise and ritual to everyday life. Inspired by the pendulum-like rhythm of mechanical motion, its interconnected gears not only enable function but also serve as visual cuesâinviting people to turn, touch, and play.
