A tree has three life stages: growth, maturity, and decay. A decaying tree is called a veteran tree. They are a source of life where organisms live together. A landmark in the landscape. They are trees with a story, a source of inspiration, and a meeting place. They take in the community.
Veteran trees amaze
Veteran trees—trees that are on their way out—why don't we replace them with vigorous, new trees? Because they tell a wonderful story about the place where they have sometimes stood for centuries. Because they are of great ecological value. That's why we want to preserve them. We do this by collecting data and implementing new management and maintenance techniques.
The exhibition is accompanied by lectures on the multifaceted value of veteran trees and how technology can help us better understand them.
Veteran Trees tell
Eindhoven boasts 2,000 veteran trees. They are found not only in parks and avenues, but also in neighborhoods and public gardens. Through their location, appearance, or history, veteran trees tell a story. A veteran tree often serves as a meeting place where people share stories and create memories. We encourage residents to nominate a tree in their neighborhood as a veteran tree and share stories. The exhibition will inspire.
Discover the veteran trees in Wasven with an audio tour from the exhibition, or cycle with the city foresters past characteristic veteran trees throughout the city.
Veteran Trees connect
Take the plane tree in Wasven: the first World Tree in the Netherlands. A tree that can live to be 1,000 years old and connects people. The trunk was largely burned – a case of vandalism. The community launched a rescue operation, which appears to be successful. How wonderful it would be if more World Trees could grow in Eindhoven. We encourage residents to organize an activity together around a tree in their neighborhood. The exhibition offers tools.
From the exhibition, visit the World Tree, where tree experts have created an innovative wickerwork around the burned trunk. Or come to the closing event on Sunday and meet the many communities working towards a green city.
