Tea Buoy

A floating indicator for visually impaired users to know the water level by touch, and to easily make tea

The Tea Buoy makes pouring hot water safe for visually impaired users. Floating on the water, its tactile stem shows the level and its base strains tea. A low-tech tool that relies on touch, it turns tea-making into a safe, intuitive, and accessible experience.

Turning the risky act of measuring hot water into a tactile, intuitive experience

Tea Buoy embodies Boey Wang’s tactile design method—transforming a risky daily action into an intuitive and sensory experience. It began with a common problem: safely measuring hot water. Existing electronic devices for visually impaired users rely on sensors and loud alarms that are often unreliable and disturb the calm of making tea.

Boey reimagined this moment through touch. Tea Buoy floats on the water’s surface, allowing users to feel the rising water level through its gentle movement—simple, safe, and quietly precise. At the same time, it functions as a tea strainer, merging two everyday actions into one seamless gesture.

Made from food-grade silicone and stainless steel, Tea Buoy replaces digital noise with natural feedback—turning a functional aid into a peaceful ritual that is tactile, intuitive, and joyful for everyone.
