Solid Foundations

Mooring Pole Bookstand — © Friso van Dijk

A collaboration between experienced designers/craftsmen and designers with mental disabilities. The furniture collection, Solid Foundations, represents a step in the process of mastering craft and the design process.

Design by Inclusion

This collection is a series of objects designed in collaboration between experienced designers or craftsmen and students with mental disabilities (e.g., Down Syndrome). These objects are the physical embodiment of the foundational skills acquired on the road to becoming a professional woodworker/designer. This represents a large first step towards freedom and ownership for the students. Each object has its own focus, from freehand carving and shaping to joinery and finishing techniques.

Aesthetically, this collection is characterized by its solid nature. Carved and cut out slabs, mooring poles and railway ties, the large objects aim to reflect the origin of the material. Minimalist finished surfaces are juxtaposed with original qualities: rough live edges, natural oxidation and textures created by years of function in the Rotterdam harbour.
